Rules for Capitalization



      Please capitalize the following:

  • Proper names (Bob, Mr. Jones, etc.)
  • First word of sentences
  • Months/days of the week (Wednesday, October, etc.)
  • The pronoun "I"
  • Greetings and closing of letters (Yours truly, Dear Mr. Smith, etc.)
  • Holidays (Christmas, Easter)
  • Initials
  • First word of a direct quote
  • Two character state abbreviations (MI for Michigan, for example)
  • Titles of stories and papers (The Cask of Amontillado)
  • Official titles, organizations/institutions, buildings
  • Abbreviations for degrees and titles
  • Language, nationality, race
  • Sacred names
  • First word in line of outline or list
  • Section of country (Midwest, etc.)
  • Classes of high school or college (Junior class, Senior class, etc.)
  • Course of study (History 101)
  • Short titles that precede names (Principal Joe Johnson)
  • Nicknames of athletic teams (Lions, Tigers, Bears)
